Omega Speedmaster Professional Watch

It was introduced to the world in 1957. On its own merits, the Omega Speedmaster Professional was a pretty extraordinary watch. But when the space program came a knockin’… it skyrocketed, if you will, into the stratosphere… literally and figuratively. omega-speedmater-professional
NASA’s Apollo Program selected the Omega Speedmaster to be the first ever timepiece to be worn on the surface of the moon. The wearer was Buzz Aldrin as he took his Speedmaster model 145.012 which was custom fitted with Omega’s 321 caliber where no man (sans Mr. Armstrong) or watch had been before. (So perhaps Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. That’s fine, I guess. But Buzz Aldrin was the first man ever to be FAHIONABLE on the moon. Now THAT is big time. By the way, the “fashion” spread all the was to the Soviet Union as NPO Energia, the Russian space Agency, also chose to take the Spedmaster into space).
And now, the Omega Speedmaster is not just for moonwalkers anymore. (Although it might be a bit cheaper to walk on the moon). In many ways, the current Speedmaster is just like Aldrin’s model:
The case is 42mm wide and its crystal is made from Hesalite which is a shatter proof acrylic compound, that is in many ways superior to sapphire. (At least in outer space) The Speedmaster runs on Omega’s manually wound Caliber 1861 movement. And why? Cause a lot of good automatic movement would be with no gravity.) (Isn’t that nice? There’s always just a little bit of science in this blog.)
But now, instead of the “regular” (yeah, right) stainless steel version of the Speedmaster, you can get it in platinum with the complimentary gold dial. Of course, this option is about the same price as a brand new space shuttle, but hey, your birthday’s coming up isn’t it? Why not splurge a bit?)
kay, maybe this was a bit glib, but the truth is the Omega Speedmaster is one of the best watches on the planet, and it is certainly a timepiece that people (on earth) will truly appreciate.
